Francisco Javier Garcia, the minister of tourism of the Dominican Republic received the award from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), exclaiming that the award symbolised the consolidation of the development of golf.

He also added that presently they are developing golf courses of outstanding quality in the Dominican Republic and the new projects for the year 2009 will represent much higher investments compared to the last four years.

The minister of tourism also stated that the award would be used for working hard towards becoming the number one golf destination in not only Latin America and the Caribbean but also all over the world.

Dubai was also awarded as the golf destination of the year in the Gulf States, Africa and Indian Ocean region, New Zealand too was selected for the similar award for the Australasia and Asia region and it was Kenya that was awarded as the undiscovered golf destination for the year 2008 at the IAGTO ceremony which was held in Marbella.
